What to Expect from Your First Hypnotherapy Session: A Step-by-Step Guide

Starting hypnotherapy can feel like stepping into the unknown, and that can be super hard, especially if you’re someone who likes to have all the details before committing to something new.  But that’s what I specialise in, helping you step up and into the unknown to make the powerful shifts you need to and to create simple habits for big change.

This guide will walk you through exactly what to expect, so you feel informed, comfortable, and ready to take that first step towards positive change.

Booking Your Session

Booking a hypnotherapy session is straightforward and often done online or over the phone. I always ask for a payment upfront; not all therapists do but I do this for several reasons.

  1. It helps to confirm your commitment (important with hypnotherapy)
  2. I can invest the time preparing a tailored strategy for you
  3. It secures your appointment
  4. I will be there even if you are not!

Terms and Conditions: Setting Clear Expectations

Before your session, you may be asked to agree to some simple terms and conditions. These cover key areas like confidentiality, cancellation policies, and how sessions are structured. The purpose is to create a safe and clear environment for both you and your therapist.

Confidentiality is paramount in hypnotherapy. Everything discussed during your session remains private, ensuring you can speak openly about your goals and challenges.

Preparing for the Session

Once your booking is confirmed, you may be sent a short intake form. This allows your therapist to gather some key information about your goals, medical history, and any specific concerns. It’s important to be honest and thorough, as this will help your therapist tailor the session to your needs.

You might also be sent a track to listen to before your session. This can be helpful in familiarising yourself with hypnosis and beginning the process of relaxation at home.

What Happens During the Session

A typical hypnotherapy session lasts around 50 minutes, though this can vary depending on your goals. For example, sessions focused on stopping smoking or hypnobirthing might run longer or be part of a structured series.

Your session will usually begin with a short discussion about your goals, followed by an introduction to hypnosis. You may be asked what is known as the miracle question

“If I could wave a magic wand and when you woke up tomorrow the feeling you once had, had disappeared completely and for good, how would that be”.

Different therapists have different approaches, some are very provocative and subversive, others are gentle, and reflective. It’s worth chatting to a few to find out if you intuitively warm to them, this first session can also be a getting to know you session. I have seen clients who have had very different experiences with other hypnotherapists, so if the first session doesn’t work with this therapist, remember you can try others. Some of my most successful clients are my most persistent!

 Types of hypnosis

Hypnosis is very different depending on the type of therapist you are with. You may have one who uses very rapid approaches, others that use a more conversationalist approach, others who use deep progressive relaxations, and some who are very playful and may behave in unconventional ways to push you out of your existing comfort zone into broader one!

Whichever way they approach it, in this first session your therapist will guide you into a state of focused relaxation, where your mind becomes more open to suggestions aligned with your goals.

Many describe hypnosis as feeling deeply calm and relaxed, similar to the moments just before falling asleep. Importantly, you remain in control throughout the session and can end it at any time if you feel uncomfortable.

 After the Session

You may provide you with an audio track to reinforce the work you’ve done together. Listening to the track between sessions can enhance progress, helping to strengthen the positive changes you’re working towards.  The best time to do this is just before you drift off at night.

Why Hypnotherapy Works

Hypnotherapy is an evidence-based practice with a growing body of research supporting its effectiveness. Studies have shown its success in areas such as anxiety reduction, pain management, and habit change. For instance, a 2019 meta-analysis found hypnosis to be significantly effective in treating anxiety and other psychological conditions.

Finding a therapist

Hypnotherapy is unregulated so make sure that you find a therapist that is a member of a professional body that has safeguarding in place. Many bodies are affiliated with a school, so I prefer to recommend one like The National Council for Hypnotherapy.  Members have to meet criteria based on qualifications, supervision, insurance etc, but importantly the NCH is a not for profit and is completely independent of any schools or personal interest.
